Wedding Cake Tips by Expert Janet Mohapi-Banks

Janet Mohapi-Banks reveals her top tips for choosing your Wedding Cake. A delightful insight into the Cake Designers world.

If I had to give just two pieces of advice about buying your perfect wedding cake it would come under the heading of Taste and Quality. Cake is first and foremost for eating, so there is little point in buying a cake that looks fantastic but is dry and tasteless. These days you can have practically any flavour you like for your wedding cake, from chocolate cake to carrot cake, however I believe that it is a
good idea to have at least one tier of traditional rich fruit cake to offer your more traditional guests.

Your cake designer should be able to provide you with freshly baked samples so be sure to taste the cakes available. If you have a specific cake centre in mind don’t be afraid to ask your cake designer if they are able to make it. Many cake designers don’t advertise all the cakes they are able to bake.

Exceptional quality comes at a price so be sure to buy the most expensive wedding cake your budget will allow as the difference in the finish, taste and service is usually evident. From a luxury cake designer such as myself, a 3 tiered cake can cost upwards of £1,200
depending upon the design and sugarwork needed. On the other end of the scale, you can buy a shop bought undecorated cake from about £70 and dress it yourself with ribbons to match your colour scheme and of course there are many cakes in between.

If you opt for a cake from a cake designer remember that the more sugar modeling that is required and the more intricate the design the higher the cost will be; so set a realistic budget for your cake and choose your cake designer accordingly.

Whatever the cake you choose, make sure that it is the perfect cake for your unique wedding day.
